20241222 Sunday, December 22, 2024; Day at Sea

20241222 Sunday, December 22, 2024; Day at Sea

This is the first sea day of this cruise and the first formal night. Although we should have little excuse to still be jet lagged, the clocks moved forward an hour last night. We struggled to get to breakfast by 8:15am but did get in.  They close the sit down breakfast at 9am.

We did make it to the 10am morning general trivia and teamed up again with Katherine from Montreal.  We did better this morning, perhaps because there were fewer sports questions but got beat by 2 points.

The rest of the morning was pretty much free time to nap, exercise and wander about the ship.  Janet and Ben also are continuing to do Duolingo language lessons which require a block of time with an internet connection every day.  Ben ran into John and Price both at the gym and in the buffet later at lunch.

We did have to get changed into our formal clothes before going to the 4pm afternoon trivia.  This time we got beat by one point, but we got awarded a bottle of sparkling wine, which we cheerfully donated to Katherine, who doesn’t have a drink package.

Dinner was a pretty standard affair. Since the Pandemic, Princess doesn’t necessarily have a complimentary lobster meal each voyage, and it was not offered on this formal night. You can purchase lobster and filet mignon any night though.  The mains included duck, sirloin, and gnocchi. The desserts were also pretty standard, with no baked Alaska parade tonight.

We did have time to return to our rooms to get changed into something more comfortable before heading down to the Princess Theater for the first production show of the voyage.  This was a show called The Spotlight Bar. It is the first time we have seen this show.  It was very well done and high energy.

Parts were very reminiscent of the broadway show Waitress by Sara Bareilles, except if you can imagine the heroine trading the pie shop for a Miami bar.  The show both opened and closed with songs from Waitress. They spotlighted the fantasies of different people in the bar with dance and song.  One had fantasies of becoming a dancer. Another had more wistful cat’s in the cradle take on regrets over decisions made in his life.  And another was a woman searching for her dream date swiping through her dating app.  They also managed to work in a talking fish plaque on the back of the bar, a version of the cup song and cowboys clogging on the table tops.  The performers were all very talented, and the vocals were great.  It was a very worthwhile show to watch.

After the show we did graze about, hitting the Gelato shop for our fix of sweet, and the poolside Salty Dog grill for savory before calling it a night.

Tomorrow we arrive in San Juan Puerto Rico. The ship arrives at 10am and doesn’t cast off until 6pm, so we should have plenty of time to explore on our own.
